What is Valium?

Valium is a mild sedative that is commonly prescribed to treat anxiety.  Also known as diazepam, Valium is a relatively mild drug with a moderate potential for abuse.  Anytime Valium is used against the instructions of a prescription or it is used without a prescription, there is a risk of addiction occurring.  Find out more about Valium here.

Side Effects of Valium

Various side effects may become evident when Valium is used but most of them are not serious.  For instance, the patient or individual taking the Valium may feel drowsy, tired, weak or have slurred speech when taking the medication.  Some of the side effects that could be risky and which should be immediately reported to a doctor include hyperactivity, confusion or hallucinations, depression or suicidal thoughts, seizures, or loss of bladder control.

Diazepam Side Effects

The side effects of diazepam are just the same as those that result from taking Valium.  Because Valium and diazepam are the same drug, one is simply the name brand and one is the generic form, the side effects too are the same.  Individuals taking diazepam may feel any one of the following side effects:

  • Drowsiness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Dry mouth
  • Slurred speech
  • Blurred vision
  • Double vision
  • Itching
  • Memory problems

If you feel any of the following symptoms when taking Valium or diazepam, contact a doctor immediately:

  • Muscle twitching or tremors
  • Urinating less than usual, not urinating at all or having a loss of bladder control
  • Weak or shallow breathing
  • Aggression
  • Hostility
  • Risky behaviors
  • Unusual thoughts or behaviors

Effects of Valium

The effects of Valium tend to slow the individual down reducing anxiety, alleviating muscle spasms and eliminating many of the withdrawal symptoms that are felt during alcohol detox.  Valium is prescribed to treat all of these conditions and, when taken properly, can be a very effective medication for these instances.  Unfortunately, as time goes on, the individual will usually develop a tolerance to the drug and more of the diazepam will be necessary in order to feel the same effects.  It is this tolerance build up that leads to physical dependence and addiction.
